California bans spanking

WTF! I think they are interferring in the roles of parents just a bit too much. I was spanked as a child and I turned out just fine. With my kids I incorporate both time outs and spankings. Sometimes a spanking is the only thing that will work. They rarely get em but if I have put then in time out and have reprimanded them over and over for the same problem then I warn them that if they do it one more time I will spank them. It works and if they do do it again I spank them and that works really well.

I remember my mom telling me "wait until your dad gets home". Shit, I straightened up for the rest of the day. I still got a spanking and that misbehavior did not happen again.

It's all a bit rediculous imo. What do you guys think?

California would become the first state to explicitly ban spanking for children younger than 4 under legislation to be introduced next week.

Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, a Mountain View Democrat who is crafting the measure, said corporal punishment is victimizing helpless children and contributing to a society "addicted to violence."

"The only thing a child learns by being beaten is that it's OK to beat or dominate children or animals that are smaller," she said.

Critics blasted Lieber's proposal Thursday as excessive, saying it would step on parents' toes and force judges to decide whether a swat was a spank, a nudge, a push or a "love tap."

Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville, said he does not condone abusive practices but that a swat, judiciously applied, should be left up to parents. "If I was talking in church, I'd get thumped in the head with a prayer book once in awhile," Gaines said. "It worked."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken no position on the measure, press secretary Aaron McLear said.

I was spanked as a child...look at me, I'm perfectly normal.

I'll never forget the words from my mother, "go pick me a switch!". Man, did that really stink. I used to try to pick a switch that was just right so it didn't pop my arse to much. hehe

You should be able to reason with your child, but in some cases a good'ole pop in the ass is required IMO. Nothing severe, but a good enough pop to square them up.

Lord knows how many paddlings I got in school. I even managed to get one my junior year of high school.

oh my goodness, whats next. Pretty soon kids will have all the control. Shit, I was spanked, paddled, beat down, whipped, whatever you want to call it and I appreciate that fact my parents took that route. Spoiled kids = trouble.

I don't have reason 99% of the time to spank my kids, but when its deserved then they get it and they never repeat the actions that got them in that situation again. Its healthy parenting in my eyes.

well I supose spanking IS a good learning method, but you must not overlook the fact that it could become a form of violence if miss-used.

in my personal childhood i was spanked often, as well as other forms of punishment, but most of the times the punishment was unjustified.

anyways, I think there are worst forms of violence than just a spank, people can do much more harm with words, thats what the state should be banning

If you tried just reasoning, the point might not get across
and the child could possibly end up dead (worst case scenario)..

Maybe its more a public thing.. so people can interfer with parents that feel the need to beat their kids in public

Yep, just the other day my son kept climbing on the recliner. I told him to quit it twice. He did it again and fell off and hit his head on hard wood. So I picked him up and dusted him off. He went right back to climbing on it so I swatted his hand (he is pretty damn young). He did it again and that time I spanked him. He did not do it again. Better to make his leg red then to allow him to crack his head open.

Yeah, I can't see non-abusive spanking as a bad thing. I don't think it works at all if used for anything- needs to be important imo. I've seen that and can attest for it. Kids that get wacked for every infraction miss the point altogether. But when used properly, its a powerful tool. And a ban? Lol, I don't see people following it.

Another case of the good suffering because of the actions of the bad.

First off, California hasn't banned spanking. It isn't law. It's a bill that is still being drafted and has yet to come before the California legislature. I doubt it will pass. State senators everywhere get funny hairs up their butt to try to pass legislation that is doomed to fail. I bet this is one of them.

My mother told me a story a few months back. She told me that as a child, I would always spill my drinks and she would get so frustrated. Once when I was around four years old, I had spilled my glass of milk all over the floor. She got angry with me and spanked me. Afterward, as she was cleaning up my mess, I asked her,

"Mommy, who spanks you when you spill your milk?"

She never spanked me again after that. And it's true; I can't ever recall a time when my mother spanked me. I don't know if that made me turn out better, or worse.

I certainly don't feel parents should be punished for spanking their children. While I feel spanking is on its way out, it should be allowed to die a natural death.

plus the current laws on child abuse are not being enforced/investigated as they were intended to be. Child and Family Services are inundate with cases and accusations but don't don't have the manpower to investigate the already present child abuse cases.
