| Bill Gates Does Good I just found this in the back of AdBusters - it's called America Looks Beyond and is a program based in taking a student from every high school in America and taking them on a six-week trip to a third world country in an effort to reeducate both Americans and people around the world. The idea is to increase understanding of both our people of other people and other people of our people. I looked at a page-sized picture of Bill Gates, made a quizzical look, read the caption, looked at him again and smiled. Not sure I've ever done that. The opposite page reads "The way to win the war on terror is to democratize the global system and close the gap between the rich and the poor." I dig on the education and understanding, myself. http://www.pewandgatesforpeace.org/ |

| Ah, yes, I see this now...those little propagandists...AdBusters is one of my fave mags but very hard to read at times because the red light on top of my head goes off every few seconds screaming "bullshit." Then again, I feel the same about CNN and USA Today... That issue was cool, though, Jan/Feb year-end issue, lots with people around the world that saved the world, stuff people did, inventions we didn't hear about, that kind of stuff. |

| I could think that way, but I don't. I talk to rich people all the time that talk about their responcibilty to the people of the world, whether it's to donate to tsunami victims or supporting the fine arts that our government so neglects. In my life, I have found that people tend to hate the rich not over policy, but rather envy. Which is ironic, I think. |

| I refrained from posting to this nice positive vibed thread at first but I cannot keep my mouth shut any longer. I'm not gonna pat Bill Gates on the back until he does something significant. All I've seen so far is meaningless and ineffective AIDS research, a legal battle that took up more tax payers money then you can wrap your head around and microsoft programs that cost hundreds of dollars. I don't normally refer to biblical wisdom, but there is a parable about the widow who gave her last dime (or equivalent semitic currency from 2000 years ago) and was more blessed than the clergy man who gave 10 times as much. It's a simple principal. Bill Gates has the capital and power to change the world on numerous fronts--shit he has the capital to advance this society more than I can even imagine. A few million in tax writeoffs for AIDS research and gates scholarships do nothing but promote his national image and company, thereby making him even more powerful and influential. His money sits in banks and gets loaned to everywhere and everyone including more big business and developing countries with tyrants and nuke programs. Very little good is done with wealth, mostly because you don't get THAT wealthy w/o taking advantage of something and pushing the envelope of laws designed to stop anyone from becoming that wealthy and powerful to the very breaking point. I'm not talking about the guy that owns his own food joint or something and gouges you for a pizza to pull in a couple hundred gs a year. When you get to the amount of richness that is measured in millions I think it is more of a mental disorder than business and the protestant work ethic to try and acquire more. To finish my rant I'll just say that I believe that you can not posses that much wealth and be a good person. Billions of $ sitting idle and not even being invested for personal financial growth, if not in the future of the species; while people starve to death is bad karma and just plain bad news.
