Use a proxy chain and not just one, much better for surfing and you will be able to post using other proxies if one goes down or blocks the site.
    My 2 cents

I'm posting a few links for proxy use. This may have been done already.

One should only use a proxy if it comes back as being "Proxy is high anonymous (elite)" -if your concerned about privacy. I personally would avoid any US based proxies as well. It would be better to have it in a foreign country. Reason being, if the proxy server keeps logs -the time delay between unfriendly nations might might be long enough that these logs no longer exist. Keep in mind this is only for inet surfing habits. In other words, proxies will not save you from illegal activities. Your only trying to blur the tracks on surfing habits, etc.

You can check your ip from "stayinvisible" in the main menu. I would advise against using the "Check Proxy" for anon status with the "stayinvisible" site, more beneficial to use the second link.

You can also chain anon proxies.
    An example:
    [user] ---> [proxy1] ---> [proxy2] ---> [proxy3] ---> [web site]

    http://proxya: port/http://proxyb: port/http://proxy C: port/http://proxyd: port/

Chaining and switching of proxies every 30 seconds or so is great, but it is likely undesirable for small bandwidth users. Proxy use is valuable against Spyware and Adware.

I would go with one out of your country cause rumor has it some of the paid services could be owned by the wrong people.

After days of searching and checking things out I might suggest http://www.slysurf.com
    It is cheap and simple.

So now I have to decide between the-cloak or slysurf - both owners are out of the usa and servers are in usa.

Any opinions or anyone has experience with these?

VPN is definitely the way to go, and remember sometimes it *is* better to go with a bigger company. There was something awhile back "Operation Firewall", nabbed nearly 30 people, over 50 counts against them. The majority thought they were safe with their privately owned VPN setup by one of their own. This person was actually working for the Secret Service, so these guys are trading all of this info (highly illegal, btw) while the secret service just sat back and watched, racked up the logs. Other countries aren't exactly safe either, "Operation Firewall" was the joint effort of the Secret Service and over 9 different countries. Of course, the targets of all of this planning were people that dealt in identity theft and millions of dollars worth of credit card debt was amassed by the community that they ran/helped run, and it did take several years to pull all of it off. Just remember, the feds have unlimited time, money and resources. If they want you bad enough, they will get you.

Please help me to surf safely- proxy [merged]

I checked out the info on surfing safely on mycotopia (good stuff by the way). I downloaded and installed a4 proxy. Unfortunaly I can't get it to work. I've checked out their web site and technical support and even googled the problem, but I couldn't find any information on it.

I have a desktop computer and a wireless laptop. Both of these are connected to a router which connects to my DSL connection. Could there be some special configuration that I'm missing?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!
