Rye grain from a feed store

I am looking to buy a 50 lb bag of rye from a feed store. However, I am not sure what I should be asking for because I know that rye seeds won't work for grain spawn. So do I need to be asking for rye berries like I buy at the whole foods store? What is it supposed to be used for? Feed for animals?

rye grain is the same as 'berries'
just be sure it's not rye grass seed,
and yeah, animal feed also make rye bread.

Just tell em your picking up for a friend that has Horses -that way you don't actually have to to know anything about horses...The grain will be a bit dirty so will have to be washed any way...If there is any fungicide - it will b washed away...You should feel free to ask em any question about their product...

the feed stores usually call rye berries "winter rye." they prolly wont know about fungicides. but if they have em i think it has to say it on the bag.

Thank you everyone for the replys. I went yesterday and all they had was rye grass. I even told her I needed it for grain spawn for mushrooms. She was like, wow, um, let me call someone and see. She couldn't get anything ordered so I guess I'll try some other places. So just ask for rye grain for horses then?

yep, like i said above usually feed stores call it winter rye. sometimes if you ask for rye berries or grain they dont know the difference between that and rye grass.

Yeah I asked for winter rye over the phone and she said she had it. Then I got there and she said it was rye grass. Also my dad said that he has bought winter rye before to grow. So I'm a little confused. Does the rye produce seeds and berries that are different from one another? So if I ask for winter rye is it possible that they are giving me winter rye seed and not winter rye berries or are they one in the same when it comes to winter rye?

Ive never had a problem just asking for rye grain. Just make it clear that you dont want rye grass seed. I havent had any problem finding it at any of the feed/garden/grain stores in my area. You want to make sure it doesnt have fungicide, however if it does you can innoculate with LC/G2G/Agar.
