Lycos Europe's antispam tool no longer available Published: December 3, 2004, 10:29 AM PST By Graeme Wearden After days of negative publicity and criticism, Lycos Europe's "Make love not spam" screensaver application is no longer available. The company says it's just been too popular and promises it will be back. Visitors to the Web site are presented with a graphic urging them to "stay tuned." Previously, Web surfers could download the screensaver from the site. The application uses the idle processing power of users' computers to slow down bandwidth that connects to spammers' Web sites. A Lycos Europe representative said that the screensaver has been temporarily pulled while the company deals with hosting and management issues. He said it had been downloaded by over 100,000 users and added it was "too early to say" when it would be made available again. Lycos Europe is a separate company from the Web portal that bears the Lycos name in the United States. Lycos Europe claims that it maintains roughly 40 million e-mail accounts in eight European countries. Lycos Europe has been heavily criticized for the "Make love not spam" initiative, with experts accusing the company of acting irresponsibly. "You can't break into a thief's house just because he breaks into yours. We don't support this or recommend this practice. Directing traffic is part of the degradation of the Internet we are trying to stop," said Steve Linford, director of Spamhaus, a nonprofit antispam organization. On Thursday, Netcraft, an Internet traffic monitoring company, said that Lycos Europe had successfully taken down two Web sites hosted in China. Lycos Europe, however, has said that it is not carrying out denial-of-service attacks, just slowing the bandwidth of its targets. The company has also said that it has no intention of taking Web sites offline. Lycos Europe's tactics apparently may have rebounded on the company. According to security company F-Secure, one of the Web sites the company targeted in its zombie army attack--www.mortgage.info--redirected traffic back to www.makelovenotspam.com. This means that Lycos Europe could have unintentionally affected its own Web site. Some Internet service providers appear to have taken matters into their own hands and blocked access to the site. |

| WORLD Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, pictured, has been appointed a professor at Southampton University. He is to become Chair of Computer Science at the university's School of Electronics and Computer Science. Professor Wendy Hall, head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science said: "We are delighted that Tim Berners-Lee has accepted this appointment. "Many of the staff in the school have worked with him on the development of the World Wide Web over many years, and we are now closely involved with the evolution of the Semantic Web, which is Tim's vision for the future of the Web." Sir Tim invented the World Wide Web in 1989 while working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva. Since 1994 he has been based at the Institute of Technology in Massachusetts in America directing the W3 Consortium which has been developing the Web. The university was the first worldwide to award Sir Tim in 1996 an honorary degree. Last year he was awarded a knighthood for his pioneering work on global communications. Professor Bill Wakeham, Southampton University's vice chancellor said: "Through his vision in inventing and developing the Web and ensuring that it is freely available and accessible for all, Sir Tim Berners-Lee has transformed all aspects of our world. "I very much look forward to welcoming him to Southampton as a member of our School of Electronics and Computer Science and to the significant and substantial collaborations that will follow as a result of his appointment." |

I don't think he would've been able to do all that crazy stuff if he wasn't completely enlightened, and hating on people would def not be in the job description. I'm not christian/religious or anything but the (catholic) bible was crammed down my throat for the first 18 years of my life. All my "facts" are from the that version of it, so I won't even cite examples because I don't think anyone knows whats true anymore. I love how they call them "translations". Its a nice way of saying, "well this religion doesn't suit us so we're going to change it and tell you its fact" "religion is the floor of all evil" -George Carlin By the way I do think its very good what that church is doing, its a nice attempt. (notice I said attempt). And I'm not surprised that the networks won't air it. |

Money changers - let's go tell all the churches they have to fire their accountants. I wonder if there is pressure not from T.V. but perhaps the other religions? I was raised Episcopalian and when they got that gay Bishop in Vermont most Episcopalian churches took about a 33% hit; getting back the the money, which for some reason is very evil so we must give it all to the church so they can dispose of it properly. I think a church advertising is a rather odd concept, it just seems sort of wrong to me. Only ones I have ever been down with were the ones from {gag} the Roman Catholic Church - big black billboards that said stuff like, More happens Sunday than football. - God Which part of "thou shalt not" didn't you understand? - God They were fun. |

imagine for a second that there was no common knowledge of psychedelic mushies no websites telling you how to grow them and explaining what doses usually do what. now imagine you are just a hiker lost on a mountain in the wooded area you forrage for food but all that there is to eat is mushrooms you know nothing about the trippy side effects of cubes so you eat handfuls of fresh mushies trying to qwell the pains of hunger your stomach is in such a tight not from not eating for almost two days. so you eat handfuls and handfuls of fresh mushies until you get your fill and lay at the base of a tree a big thick old wise tree ...... can you imagine the next 12 hours?

They'd do better to take all that advertising $ and use it to actually help someone - for a change. Churches that get lots of money tend to build bigger churches, "for the glory of god." Meanwhile, there's all kinds of fucked up shit going down a few blocks away - ignorance, hunger, crime... Where's the glory in that? Those billboards are probably the best thing the Catholics have done in decades - too bad they discontinued that ad campaign so they could pay off all the molested kids... Christ turned away all sorts of people, some for damn good reason too. The catholic church (and others) turn away all sorts of people, but usually the wrong ones |

Has anyone seen Drawn Together on comedy central? If you are a fan of the cartoon arts, like myself, {I can hear the chorus of "No Shit? Shed likes commix?"} you might want to check that out. The current episode was even about hallucinagens! The little trading card monster Ling-Ling exudes a hallucinagen when it becomes disappointed. That show is extreeeemely funny. Ling-Ling is the little Pekachu looking critter in the shower next to the girls...

ok so im doing masonary work with a buddy we are working on his house we did windows, roof , the whole nine he has full cement steps ...one of them is hollowed out and almost blown out from rain creeping in from a crease up top he also has a sidewalk that is all cracked and the pads need help now ive helped build a patio before, but never seen the cement floated i know how deep to dig, how much agrigate to use, and how to tamper it down. any tips on how to float cement. my buddy can form it all up. but ive never floated cement before, and if we do it we will just hire a truck to come out and pour the cement for us...im guessing we are gonna use about 7 yards. well do the math after we form it up. so thanks in advance to any masonary skilled people it really doesnt look that fraggin hard looks like you have it poured, use the flat edge of the trowel to kinda level it out, use the big float to float it all level. then after an hour use a piece of wood as an edge and every four feet scrape out the expansion gaps. then use a broom for texture. SEEMS easy tips welcome especially for using the bullnose to put the groove in the steps...and if im correct..we should round out the edges of any patios so its more resistant to cracks right? steps and a walkway.....help me out hehe thx myco oh...two more really quick questions......there is an agent that slows drying correct?(lol ill probably need it ) and two...is there any way to get cement that isnt that horrible white color...i hate when it dries white...his whole surrounding area is tan...cant they taint the color? thx

7 yards is a big chunk for two guys without a lot of experiance...especially if its warm outside. It'll get away from you and you'll have a giant ugly rock. I'd hire a day laborer with some experiance to help. Cost you a few dollars up front, but its easier than absorbing $600 in concrete cost than having to break it all out for a do over.

well its pretty cool where im at now i dont think id ever attempt the steps myself to be honest. but i can see us doing the walkway see the steps he has are a solid four step structure.... i have a few masonary friends, but only one that knows how to float , the rest are pointers and getting him to help is like pulling teeth cause his life is so busy right now. i just cant see the sidewalk being hard maybe im just nieve. as long as its all formed up correctly and i dont have a dickhead cement truck driver. thanks for the concern though man....believe me i know about digging shit out we dug out a double patio. me and two friends, it was 20 yards of dirt! we filled a ten yarder..and then had to get a second one....jesus then we had to shovel four tons of agrigate into the area. all by hand..shovel and bucket..and a wheelbarrel at first sucked

last night I ate about 5 grams dry and tripped prety hard. A few hours later, when I thought I wasnt really tripping any more, I was in teh bathroom fulling up my water container. I looked down into the sink and let my mind go into it and sudleny my arms and chest just sort of faded away. When my concentration got disturbed they would fade back in a little but covered in fractals. Any one had anything like this? |

ive been pressure cooking brf jars all day but on like the 6-7th batch I noticed a nasty smell coming from the cooker as i opened it to remove the jars, .. now the closest i can explain the smell; actually brings me back to my school days i recall tossing a sandwich i hadn' ate for lunch in the bottom of my locker..... well 5 months later i found that sandwhich, not because i remembered throwing it down there, but that smell of rotting bologny, bread, lettuce and mustard made me want to puke and not to mention the fact that it was green ,..that is the closest example i can give you of what it smells like, ... even after washin it several times i can still smell it,..... despite the nasty smell could they possibly colonize, i went ahead and injected like 12 jars because i thought it was all in my head |

It can't be rotten if it just came out of the pc. If everything you put in was fresh, you're ok. Probably just some spillage that burned. You can't be smelling bacteria if you've been running the pc all day. Think about it. Ten minutes of boiling kills live bacteria.

Like you said, this is a community afterall. Don't you think that inviting the masses to our community will have stronger bad effects then good? It takes at least an hour to wade through the plethora of information every day as it is. And 99.9% of that is informative and positive for our hobby. I'm guessing that the large population of people that frequent High Times are high school age kids who want nothing more then pictures of pot. I myself enjoy High Times and find the stories informative and entertaining, but I don't believe that I am in the norm. I'm not trying to sound like a stuck up elitest or anything, but I believe that this board has enough people contributing. Occasionally we gain a new member (I myself am rather new, again) but they are generally people that are seeking information about the sacred mushroom, and are willing to contribute to the group to help themselves learn and others. They are not, generally, some kid who wants to get as high as possible, or grow as much as possible so they can sell to there friends in 2nd period ceramics. I really don't see any good coming from this advertisement, except the monetary compensation that you would receive. Admitedly, there will more then likely be a few quality members added, but out of the several thousand crappy ones, is that worth it? I wish you much success in your business dealings hip, and I'm sure no one here would like nothing more then to see you rewarded with piles of money for what you have created here. But hasn't mycotopia grown to something much larger than one person at this point? It is now a full fledged community, and communities don't belong to one man. They belong to the community. Do what you will, I just feel so apart of this place already, and I would hate to see anything degrade it in any way. I will continue to be a supporter of this community, but how many will if it is overrun by thousands annoying and immature posts? (Message edited by shamrox on December 05, 2004) |
