My wife has a friend where she works, who immigrated over hear (legally?) from Mexico. This man is approximately 60 years old and works 2 full time jobs and a part time job. This guy works over 80 hours per week to support his family. It would be hard for him to learn our language fully as he has no time.

Ultimately IMO it hurts him not learning the English language by limiting his jobs that he would have available to him. In a way it isolates him from English speaking people (other than those who look past the barrier). I would imagine that he would like nothing more than to speak English fluantly, but his first concern is taking care of his family.

I furthermore think that most immigrants feel the same way.

Just making a random conjecture as to what the thread was about, I'd say it was about 5% serious, 95% not serious. Merely commenting about all the Spanish speaking people in America that aren't learning English and how some people don't want to learn to speak Spanish.

No, just concerned that one day soon enough the English language will be second in a land it should not be. Wondering why the hell people that immigrate here can't get off their asses and learn the language. Hell, they don't have to anymore.

Please be careful not to take it there. I'm enjoying this debate. I'd really hate to see it go to that level. You say you were only 5% serious, but statements like that can be conceived as offensive.

Most of the immigrants that come to the United States are uneducated, making it harder for them to learn a new language. As I posted before, most immigrants that come over here are not sitting on their asses and in fact work harder than some Americans.

Its easy to judge when you are not the one in their shoes. Many are working two jobs to get by and its hard to get by on minimum wage even with two jobs. I would imagine it difficult to find the time to learn a new language under these circumstances.

I don't think Spanish speaking immigrants have the mentality of "I'm not learning their language, I have my own". I think its more of a matter of convenience and time. We all have things that we need to work on with ourselves, but "can't find the time". But, we don't need someone to point them out to us.

Ahh, there is this strange guy that walks around my town all the time, he goes by the name Dr. T . . . anyway, he walks around all day handing out poems that he has written. They don't rhyme, not that they have to but they aren't even any good either. They are all about the strangest things, here is one them

Dr_T -- stop fanning the flames man. Let's have some mo' discussion. No disrespect but I would much rather read a debate on American immigration policy and whites becoming the minority then a grammar nazi and some drama llama. Like the stuff you and everyone else contributed earlier.

My view on how I feel things should be are this. The establishment with the largest power at the closest proximity decides what's right. So until the minority gains a stronger hold on the majority, I don't feel like things will change or really need to change. After a generation is educated under the American system and grows in a more Americanized setting they are usually bi-lingual or speak enough English to get by.

I have friends that anytime someone says anything remotely racist they get all worked up. 8 times out of 10 they end up in a fight later that night. Hell, three weeks ago two of my friends got stabbed because they decided they didn't want to leave the rednecks alone. So they all got to go to the hospital that night. Not me though.

You can't tell racists to stop being racist . . . the only thing you can do is to not give them the pleasure of seeing you squirm and get upset. It is THE only way to end racism. The biggest and most violent racists have shallow gene pools anyway. They can only go on for so much longer until they are all mentally handicapped.

Santiago, I applaud your actions towrds racism and agree with you wholeheartedly!!

I never understand why people get so up in arms over what some dingleberry says to or about them. I always felt if someone doesn't like me and judges me by what I look like, there's a pretty good chance I won't like them either. Makes avoiding assholes just that much easier!!
