How Reputation Works

I had someone ask me to explain how the reputation system works on the site and figured instead of explaining it to just 1 person, ill make this up and throw it out here. More people might find it useful in the future. Maybe someone whos a little better at verbally explaining things can chime in with the meaning of the reputation system, and what were trying to acomplish by using it. Personally i think join date and post count are a better source and i think people need to understand the purpose of the system for it to work better

Can rep points be taken away? It seems i've seem less greenies under some members avatar lately. Also some members are labeled as "disliked" and was wondering how that happens. Thanks Cornfield for the info.

rep can go down when a neg is given to you, and goes red when you go less than 0 points. check out your user cp, there is a points indicator above your rep on the top right side.

Can reputation be edited by a mod, say for example someone intended to give a good rep, but accidentally gave bad?

Or is it here to stay?

Text in it I belive can be edited by a supermod but, I think can only be removed or changed by the admin

I accidently gave someone negative rep and tried to change it but you can only give rep once in the same thread. I went to another thread were the member posted some good advise and wanted to bump some good rep to make up for the booboo but a popup said i needed to 'spread the rep around' or something like that before a rep that member again.
Oh well my like rep points dont do much anyway.
