Definition of a Hippie

Hippie - A person who believes in peace, love, freedom and happiness, someone who rejects the established culture; advocates extreme liberalism in politics and lifestyle. You don't have to use drugs to be a hippie.

American conservatives of the late sixties used the term hippie as an insult toward young adults whom they considered unpatriotic, uninformed, and naive.
Others used the term hippie in a more personal way to disparage long-haired, unwashed, unkempt drug users.

In contemporary conservative settings, the term hippie is often used to allude to slacker attitudes, irresponsibility, participation in recreational drug use, activism in causes considered relatively trivial, and leftist political leanings.

So who is a hippie? I have been called one all my life, but would not classify myself as anything but myself, you know what i mean?

I had always heard and thought of the word HIPPIE as ... Help In Preserving Personal Individual Emphasis. Kind of a response if you will to the stifling conformity of the 50's mainstream culture.

i think hippie was an offspring of outsiders of the beat movement who termed anyone who left the conventional capitalistic duties to the wayside in the pursuit of more creative or spiritual ways of life.
