Brew Day Pics

Today I brewed 10 gallons of Bavarian Weizen or German Wheat Bier. Here's a few shots from the brew day. I mash my grains in a 70 quart Coleman cooler, and boil in a 15.5 gallon converted keg. The other keg is used as hot water tank. I use a 50 foot copper chiller and ferment in 8 gallon buckets. Cheers!

This is the 5 gallon recipe:

Ingredients
5.00 lb Weyermann Pale Wheat Malt
4.00 lb Weyermann Pilsner Malt
0.66 lb Munich Malt
0.20 lb Caramunich Malt
0.62 oz Hallertauer (60 min) Hops 10.3 IBU
0.41 oz Hallertauer (15 min) Hops 2.3 IBU
5.51 gm Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate) (Mash 60.0 min)
1 Pkgs Hefeweizen IV Ale (White Labs #WLP380)

Est Original Gravity: 1.050 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.012 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.0 %
Bitterness: 12.6 IBU
Est Color: 7.7 SRM

Mash Profile
Single Infusion at 152 F for 60 min

wheres that picture from bro? I've seen stuff like that in giant robot in SF. I always kick myself in the ass when I don't purchase art when I travel...and they have awesome stuff there. hell if its in your basement I've got a wall for you to hang it on... very off topic...

The brew sounds good too! I need to do some brewing, I love beer but barely drink. Getting old...

Nice setup, my friends and I each just recently built that same Mash Tun, 70 quart Coleman Xtreme and everything with SS hose braid and same bulkhead by the looks of it.
One question though, it appears that you used hose clamps to secure the braid to the hose barb; and if you followed the same thread I did on HBT you'll remember that the OP ran into problems with the hose clamps he bought (screws on them ended up being glavanized and hence rusted in his beer.) His solution was to place the SS braid over a hi-temp plastic tube with slots cut in it (to facilitate draining) with the hi-temp tube being then placed over the inside hosebarb. On the other hand if you did indeed find all SS hose clamps (marine hardware supply store was where folks found them in the HBT thread) then your gravy.

Perhaps (if i can motivate my lazy arse) I'll take some picures of the one I threw together with any of the additions or modifications I used aswell.

In the meantime folks check it out.

Edit: Oh, not trying to detract from this thread with that link btw, but I was hoping it might add some insight.

As an aside, I'm rather envious of your tiered setup. I young now but lifting that kettle back and forth from the stove is going to get progressively harder.

Thanks for the heads up Scroto. The hose clamps and braid are all stainless so I shouldn't run into problems. I love the Coleman Xtreme, it's perfect for 10 gallon batches and doesn't lose heat during the mash. The wooden shevels I used are from ikea. They can support the weight and they're adjustable in height. A cheap alternative to a fabricated steel structure.

Yo waylit, I was wondering what do you use as a fermentation vessel for those 10 gallon batches?
Right now I have 6.5 gallon fermentation buckets and do 5 gallon batches but am thinking about scaling up. I'm thinking of either one of those teardrop shaped demijohns or a conical fermentor on legs(my preferred choice.)

I love experimenting with different yeasts, so I normally split the 10 gallon batch into two buckets, and pitch a different yeast into each. I use those 8 gallon plastic buckets from Brewcraft. It's fun to ferment the same beer with two different yeasts, you really do end up with two different beers. It's the best way to get familiar with the flavor profiles of various yeast strains.

Good deal man, sounds like a tasty experiment for sure. I was planning on using that idea for an IPA in the future. One with a nice fruity Belgian yeast (a la Stone brewerys' Cali-Belgique IPA) and then another with a more traditional clean fermenting yeast.

Ok, now I'm just ramblin...

This is a tried and true recipe which was collaborative effort by an online brewing community. One detail I left out is that the yeast absolutely makes this beer. I've tried various weizen yeasts and WLP300 Hefeweizen Ale Yeast is the best one out there.

Yeah, yeast is a huge contributing factor for many details of a finished brew. From taste, ALC%, clarity, aroma etc. I agree totally.
