worked fine, learned i should a] remove the tape covering the filter holes on BOTH ends of it ![]() b] pre-heat the wort before pouring into mr.distiller would have saved time. got about a full fifth out of my first batch, and the candy red-hots worked fine, too. all in all a pretty easy way to make 'shine, esp. for total newbs like myself.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Just wondering if a cork/airlock are necessary for fermenting for a hard liquor? Can't you just put a lid on and not snap it down so gasses can escape safely, or is there a reason why you would want to vent via airlock i.e. higher alcohol content? (only asking because for brewing beer my instructions have been to leave it in the primary fermenter which is just a bucket and lid)

Mash for hard liquor doesn't need to be high in alcohol as long as there is lots of it, so this tek can be used unless you wanted a really high alcohol starting mash.

Well the reason you use an airlock is to prevent any contams getting into your mix while letting it breath at the same time. I had a buddy a couple months ago start a batch of beer, he was using a bucket with a lid that had a hole in the lid for the airlock. He did everything right except he forgot to put the lid on tight and he ended up getting mold and had to dump the whole batch. Preventing contams is as important in brewing as it is in mycology. Although you might get away contam free for a while its always better to be safe then sorry.

I haven't had the ones that mr. distiller sells, but I have used other essence products, and they were decently tasty. Not the best stuff ever, but it beats unflavored grain.

I tried finding a website for Mr Distiller but couldn't, so I don't know what flavorings they use. I have used Noirot and Royal Piper. Like kcmo says, they are better than raw alcohol.
