You could probably make one by using two different sized Plastic cups, a bic pen, silicone and A big cork or Duct tape. Dismantle the pen and cut it down to the length you need, or you may want it the full length. Drill the appropriate sized hole in the cork (size of the pen). Cut same size hole in the bigger of the two cups and silicone the pen into the cup about 2". Once dry jam the other end of the pen into the cork. Use the smaller cup as the bubbler. cover the opening with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in it so it can breath. For the cups I would think you would use the big ones for beer for the larger and a dixie cup size for the bubbler. Edit: Damn it Ben, you beat me to it with a easier way

The cheapest, easiest lock I've seen is just a piece of plastic tubing siliconed into the lid, with the loose end hanging into a glass of water. The tubing's long enough to reach the surface the fermenter's on, where the glass sits. I only did this once, and there was no problem with sucking the water back through the tube. Even at the end of fermentation the water only came up an inch or so with changes in barometric pressure.

When doing a primary beer fermentation in a carboy, I use bugs' method, a blow-off bung. A stopper with tubing going into a glass, but water in the glass isn't necessary. It's unlikely any fruit flies will travel all the way up the tube to attack your mash. You do know that a plastic airlock is only about a dollar, don't you? I'd mail you some extras I have, but the postage would be more than the equipment is worth.

I think the water is to block out airborne pathogens that could spoil the wort. Jeez, still only a buck for a lock? Pretty good. I haven't brewed in years 'csuse the family can't stand the marvelous aroma of boiling wort, so haven't kept up with prices of brew goodies.

"I think the water is to block out airborne pathogens that could spoil the wort." Getting a tad off topic here, but... During the first energetic phase of beer fermentation, all the travel in that tube is one way & continuous. CO2, foam, trub - it all comes out the blow off bung and you catch it in the glass or jar. If you had an airlock on there, it would fill up with crud. This is for people who do the primary ferment in a carboy instead of a pail.
