![]() | there may be chlorine in my tap water. my plants have not shown any adverse side effects after three consecutive waters. If chlorine was present, would I notice something immediately? Or would it take time to build up? It seems that chlorine evaporates, thus buildup would be difficult. Does H2O2 (peroxide) neutralize the chlorine? thanks!

just let tapwater set in the open for 24 hours and the chlorine will dissapate. i found chlorinated water to have little impact on large healthy plants but weak clones/seedlings are affected more seriously. chlorine does not build up in the soil. |

"there may be chlorine in my tap water" I thought all tap water had chlorine in it. If you stop by a pet store you can get a plant-safe declorinator made by Tetra called AquaSafe. It takes 2 minutes for it to work and one 17oz bottle treats about a thousand gallons. Better yet there's this one, one 2oz bottle treats 1,200 gallons http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...735351-2339903 |

When back in the day I used city water for my hydro setup I just let the reservoir tank sit for 24 hours before opening the valve to the farm. My problem was the TDS even after filtering was rather high used to eat up filters trying to keep it down. Peace...

i would not use fish tank water on my plants, esp. not a tank that has had chemicals added to it. or diseases in it, etc. the fish waste is good fert, be sure it's a healthy fresh water tank free of doubtful chemicals. Last edited by Hippie3; 03-31-06 at 22:33. |

![]() | Do you use tap water????
What's up Mycotopia??? Was just wondering if using tap water vs. spring water would have any effect on the mushrooms? I know that when being grown in the jar stage it may not make too much of a difference? But what about when growing the mushrooms in say the terranium? Is there any advantages to using spring water instead of tap water? Thanks!!!

I like to use pond or rain water for hydrating grains and substrate but prefer distilled water for syringe making and spraying in the fruiting chamber...My city water is high in minerals and chlorine, although it seems to work ok if i filter it first....

it's only a dollar a gallon at the grocery store space ![]() i've been using distilled water for my projects as it's been shown that the tap water around here causes cancer a few years ago alot of people around here were getting sick and they couldn't figure out why untill they found a dead bloated cow blocking one of the intakes for the water filtering plant... that also seems to say alot about how well they filter the water lost |

I started with three gallons of distilled water. I had INTENDED to ever only use distilled water. Then I made a small batch of jars whilest listening to Bob Marley. Said jars had been in the PC for about twenty minues when I remembered that I had made them with tap water. Being the incredibly lazy, er, experimental person that I am, I used them anyway. They worked just fine... The two gallons of distilled water are sitting on my "mushroom crap I could have spent more wisely on" shelf.

I've noticed there seems to be a lot of chlorine in my tap water lately and that is causing some issues with rooting plants... The solution: I've been filling up empty gallon jugs with the tap water, and leaving a little air space on top. Once, twice, or three times during the day I'll open it, and blow in it, and vent out the excess chlorine gas which has evaporated. After a day or two, no more chlorine. Nice water for rooting or whatever actually. I've been seeing better results already. |

More and more cities these days are treating their water with chloramines, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. It doesn't dissipate out of water like chlorine does. I know for aquariums, it produces huge problems because even after carbon filtering out the chlorine, it leaves behind ammonia in the water. http://www.aquamd.com/resources/wate..._Tap_Water.htm "In addition, scientists have discovered chloramines can create their own disinfection byproducts, such as N-nitrosodimethylamine. And this specific disinfection byproduct is a human carcinogen. Some research links chloramines to bladder cancer. It's also believed the ammonia used to create chloramines in water can cause nitrate levels to rise and hurt young children." "Chloramines are very difficult to remove from water by using reverse-osmosis systems or water softeners. Distilling water also won't remove them. But they can typically be removed with the right granular-activated carbon filter. The problem: Public water supplies typically also contain other toxic substances that may not be removed by granular-activated carbon. No water filter exists that treats all problems." |

I fill up a couple 4 gallon buckets also, and let them set 3 or 4 days, and use that water for watering the plants. Sometimes i'll drop an airstone in one if i'm bubbling guano tea. No need to cover it up with a lid, open air is great. I don't know if the ammonia is a bad thing, ammonium nitrate is commonly used in chem fertilizers. |
