Found this on a walk. If anyone has anything to say about this mushroom, here's their chance.

    No I didn't eat it.

Looks like a morel that's starting to go to goo.Could be a false morel though. I'm not good at spotting the difference between the two.

It's either a Bell or Half Free Morel i'd think.

    False morel

False morels are almost solid inside , unlike
    the totally hollow true morels.

Thanks, Invitro! I've always wondered about how to tell the difference.

It'd be great to have sort of a mushroom identification thread where people talk about different clues, and techniques for identifying mushrooms in the wild.

Of course it'd have to be with the disclaimer/understanding that any true identification has to be done after years of study under an experienced mushroom guide whom you deal with face-to-face

One thing's for certain, that's definately a Morel. Which of the 2 strains I mentioned above is hard to distinguish from one another. Especially with that particular specimen.

Sorry, but that is not a morel. It is a mature stinkhorn, which are commonly mistaken for morels when they get older.

Here is a good page regarding stinkhorns

Bummer. They look just like one another. But after looking at both of them more, it's kind of easy to tell the difference.

I was thinking it was a stinkhorn. They also come in a vibrant red color and they look nasty as hell.

Hehe! Stinkhorn did cross my mind, but the cap had me fooled. I'm not really familiar or even interested in Stinkhorn's, so obviously my id was poor. Look at how close the 2 resemble one another, with the exceptions that the Stinkhorn has a slimey cap when younger and a not so hollow stem either. The honeycomb gills are underneath that slime and with age or drying they appear. Weird huh?

Thanks for catching that Workman! I would've been really annoyed if I swapped this stuff for a damn Stinkhorn. heh!

Oh well. To the auction block it goes.

Plus I have never seen a morel with
a base that is smaller than the stipe
    itself.

yea I have those in my yard as well... smell like something awful. At first sight I thought morel too, till I picked it and the smell was overwhelming, knew it was a stinkhorn then..

Saw one of those in my father-in-laws mulch the other day. It had a net around a morel like cap and I remember being like that is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Also it was covered with flies.

I see them alot here in the fall. They do look similar to morels but I usually smell them before I see them. They have an appropriate name.

I've smelled them and they smell like something dead rotting. Flies and other insects really like them because of this.

It smells like what I would think fungus oil would smell like. It's a pronounced fungus smell but it doesn't seem as earthy. You can smell them from several feet away.
