![]() | Be careful with Formosa. My experience is lots of potency variance with them. They are very beautiful, though. Visually, I like them much better than the Muscaria. That warm sunshine yellow with the white spots is just spectacular against the forest floor. Any pics would be much appreciated. Those pics are nice, but I can only ID about 5 mushrooms...sorry!

![]() | thanks buckaroo, i will be careful. i usually sporeprint one or two and collect about 4 caps and just photograph the rest. the ones i do collect are sun-dried and kept in a jar. i might one day powder them and try a very small amount like 1/2 a teaspoon as a tonic. llama...that tortus is in an indoor habitat which is quite big. i have not noticed any burrowing, but my visit with him/her was short. what do the pyramids on the shell indicate? here is a few pics of last years total harvest. there were allot more but i felt no need to take more than what i did. |

![]() | There is alot of discussion on what causes or eliminates the pyramiding. It may be caused by high amounts of protien in commercial foods. Or the fact that most torts are kept in enclosures where they are not allowed to dig. In nature they will dig a burrow up to 5 feet around and 20 feet deep. Did you see the size of the spikes on the front legs? I had one once about the size of a basketball, and he kept digging holes in the drywall. These guys will get a couple feet around and over 1000lbs.

Fresh, they are quite tasty. Just slice them up into 1/2 inch thick pieces and parboil them for about 3 minutes. All the "toxins" are highly water soluble and you are left with a darned good mushroom. Very dense flesh that sautees or goes in sauces quite nicely. They keep their color pretty well when cooked, too.
