shroom hunting

Hi, i'm brand new to the whole shroom hunting thing. i live in the Northeast right now and i've been doing research for a while now. so far, the only shroom breed i've beeen able to read about that grow in Northeast are Psilocybe Caerulipes. i was just lookin for some pointers on where these would be, and if anyone knows of a good way to know for sure if it is in fact a Psilocybe Caerulipe, and not a look alike.

any help would be greatly apreciated.

Look for this mushroom in summer and fall after warm rains. It grows on wood or woody debris often along riversides. Unlike other mushrooms which may look similar, it will bruise blue. You'll also want to take a spore print which should look purplish-brown. And check for a pellicle on fresh specimens. This is a slimy layer which can be peeled off the top of the cap. You hae several months to read up on this mushroom. An excellent description along with pictures can be found in 'Psilocybe Mushrooms of the World' by Paul Stamets.

If you have some warm rains, any of those months are worth checking. Mushrooms don't grow just during one specific week a year or something. If weather conditions are right then the window is about 3 months long and you just have to keep looking!

The ones being called caerulipes on this site may not be caerulipes, as far as I know. Llamabox would have a better explanation. But I can say that an expert (Guzman) said they were another specie. The ones you'll find discussed here are found in the spring to early summer. March - June and sporadically there after. I believe I have heard of people finding them in fall too, however. Capt's description is a good one.
