So does anyone know if this is the yellow variety of Amanita muscaria?

theyre not common in the eastern US but i think you might have a true A. muscaria var. formosa, the only similar ones are Amanita frostiana, which has a blush center to the top, and the scales are much whiter than what you show. Theres also Amanita perscina...again very orange/blush in the center of the cap. Amanita flavoconia is usually orange all over the top and much daintier in construction/smaller. Amanita aspera(= franchetti) is highly variable in its color...from bright yellow to brown, but again the flakes or scales on the cap are usually much whiter than what shown in your picture. As far as i can tell by the picture alone- youre right on target with your ID.

Yeah I am fairly confident that it is. Everything matches up right.

That picture is from last year but right now there is about 20 of em in a quarter acre area and all under oaks. They sure are pretty.

IT is basically the same as the red variety of fly agaric but I have heard reports that they are not as "good". I'm not eating it.
