first day of fall hike & hunt

    mostly a hike.

the hunting part is my search for the Amanita Muscaria var. Formosa that grow there annually.
no such luck yet as i think temps must get a bit cooler first.

some special psychedelic tea was made and off into the pine forrest i went

    the habitat
    first-day-fall-hike-hunt-habitatpine.jpgfirst-day-fall-hike-hunt-habitatlake.jpg
    pine barrens and small lakes

some very interesting fungus in these photos.
almost looked like a flower but was most def. a fungus fruitbody of some sort.
    first-day-fall-hike-hunt-flower-like.jpgfirst-day-fall-hike-hunt-flowerlike-bloom-.jpg
a picture of the 'bloom' from above, i have never seen or heard of a mushroom that looks like a flower.

there are many cool things to find-
especially in this state of mind.

    opuntia - prickly pear cacti
    first-day-fall-hike-hunt-opuntia-q.jpg

some giant pile of either straw or hay
    which was half-composted underneath.
    first-day-fall-hike-hunt-straw-hay.jpg

    and my favorite little creatures

    the three African Tortus
    first-day-fall-hike-hunt-torti.jpg

and the Tyto Alba - barn owl.

it was time to leave - after enough excercise
and the realization i would have to make another trip
to see the bright yellow/orange Toadstools i came for.

but not before stopping at the compost park
    first-day-fall-hike-hunt-compost-4.jpg
shown here is a wire compost bin, a pallet compost bin, a tumbler compost unit and a double composting bin.

a few snakes crossed my path as i was leaving
and right on time as the tea was starting to work nicely.

    feel free to I.D.

Its a chlorophyll free a plant, Monotropa uniflora
Monotropa uniflora, the Ghost Plant aka Indian Pipe

    > here are a few mushrooms that were pinning

Its hard to tell because I can't see the gills well, but my guess is Tubaria furfuracea.

    > here are what look like poisonous white amanitas

Sure looks like the deadly Amanita virosa, but I woul d need to see the base of the stem to tell you for sure.

    > and a few more mystery shrooms

If you post pictures of the gills of your mystery shrooms, people will probably be able to tell you what they are.

    > small yellow clusters. got my hopes up that they might be gymnopulus but i doubt it.

Probably not Gymnopilus, maybe Pholiota. I'd need to know the spore print color to give you a good guess.

thanks Alan so that is a plant after all.
wow ghost plant indeed. very interesting read

my mail attraction to this area
is seeing & printing the Amanita Muscaria var. Formosa

in fact the Monotropa uniflora were growing
at the base of the same trees that the fly agarics grow

yeah i will try to take more gill shots next time
    thanks for the educated guesses

Hmm... the mature specimen does not remind me of Tubaria... It looks too delicate-the stipe is thin and darker than common with Tubaria, and the cap splitting at the margin like that is also unusual for the species.

If the stipe itself was easily broken, i would doubt Tubaria as they tend to be difficult to pry from their mycelial base, and i often have to use my nail to pinch the stipe base away from the ground.

you've def found the right place to get hiking. so the tea took a while to take hold? where you on your walk for most of the trip or did you head some place to sit and relax?

great pics by the way. interesting that article said when you find those plants your in a woods where its good for finding mushrooms! right on!

i had a pet turtle, i know thats different than tortus but hey... they have shells oh and when i was looking at the pic of the poisonous mushrooms i was taking a sip of my poland spring water... lol.

water is a must on such a hike

i actaully had the tea on the way there and
walked for about two hours as the effects built up.
i felt that leaving the woods was at the perfect time
as going to lay and relax somewhere seemed like the thing to do

now fungi is something i rarely get to hike on and would love the experience
    someday soon

Hey bri, the yellow ones could well be the Honey mushroom. Armillaria mellea,
spore print will be pale cream colored.
These are an edible if cooked thoroughly cooked.
Found a mess of them here the other day on a stroll through the woods. Their one of the first of the fall shrooms.
