![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Found this growing among some dead grass
Found these growing near where I work, on a grass island in the parking lot. Pretty meaty mushrooms, dark cream color even at the gills, brown stem and mottled, peeling cap. Anybody care to guess? I'm trying to get a print now, but not sure if I should use dark paper or light paper so it's on half and half now.

Wild guess since they are popping up all around me right now, including a 20' farie ring... How about Chlorophyllum Molybdites green spored Lepiota. Pretty poisonous, I have picked them up and smelled um before, I don't any more though, if it is wash your hands after playing with it, and don't smell the gills too much. grows big and is pretty common in yards around here this time of the year. I have a pic laying around of a gr spored leo I ID'ed, will put it up to see how close they are.

Looks like that's pretty close. The gills on my specimen have a very light green tint so it would at least fit the name. The Wikipedia article on the species gives plenty of similarities, so there's little doubt. The differences might be due to any number of factors, but they're small differences. I'm gonna accept your assessment. Key word: poisonous.

Here is a good example of Morgan's Lepiota. Youors may just be a species of Lepiota and not the green gill species. I see no green anywhere and there are lots of Lepiota species. ![]() The stems on the green gills tend to turn a brownish color and the caps tend to turn upwards with age. mjshroomer | |

Yeah, I gave up on trying to print it 'cause I was convinced it was the Chlorophyllum Molybdites. The article I read spoke of the gastrointestinal problems it causes (I had no intention of eating it anyway) and I just figured it was best to trash it. The gills were such a light green shade that you couldn't tell from the pics, but you're probably right that it was some species of Lepiota, not necessarily the green gilled lepiota. Now I'm seeing them everywhere as the rains have been pretty heavy here lately. Also seeing a lot of LBMs in the woods where I walk. I'm not confident enough in my knowledge to harvest any for propagation or consumption, but hey, all this takes time. Still a great excuse to go exploring, which I used to love to do as a kid. I spent most of my days walking in the parks around my house and climbing trees or walking along the creek. Takes me back....
